19th International Conference of Historical Geographers

19th International Conference of Historical Geographers

presencial Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro - Rio de Janeiro - Rio de Janeiro - Brasil

About the Conference

The International Conference of Historical Geographers (ICHG) series, established in 1975, is the leading global forum for scholars working in historical geography and related fields. Held every three years, the conference brings together researchers from around the world to present new research, exchange ideas, and engage in critical discussions on the historical dimensions of space, place, environment, and society. The ICHG fosters interdisciplinary dialogue across geography, history, environmental studies, and the social sciences, while promoting international collaboration and showcasing diverse methodological and regional perspectives.

Conference Topic

Unsettling the Archive: Historical Geographies of Coloniality, Memory, and Resistance

Historical geography has long engaged with the critical analysis of how geographical knowledge is produced, contested, and transformed across time and space. Yet the field's own conditions of possibility, given its archives, languages, and institutional homes, have not always been subjected to the same critical scrutiny. As we gather for the first time in South America, we invite the global community of historical geographers to think from a place marked by colonialism, the layered histories of slavery, Indigenous dispossession, and ongoing struggles for spatial justice, and to ask what historical geography looks like when those histories are not a backdrop, but the very ground on which we stand.

At the centre of this conference is a concern with archives as technologies of power. Archives have classified, silenced, and ordered the past in ways that continue to shape the present. They have rendered certain lives legible and others invisible, preserved some spatial imaginaries and destroyed others. The logics that have governed what gets archived and what does not are inseparable from the structural operations of race, gender, and sexuality - forces that have determined whose bodies, territories, and ways of knowing were deemed worthy of preservation, and whose were deemed expendable. But archives have also been disputed, subverted, and reimagined. Communities, movements, and scholars have built counter-archives, recovered fragments of erased histories, and developed practices of reading against the grain, asking not only what documents say, but what they were made to conceal. This conference invites reflection on what it means to unsettle the archive, to challenge its institutional logics, disrupt its classificatory systems, and open it to new gazes and imaginations.

We invite contributions that engage with these questions across a wide range of themes, methods, and geographies. How do community archives, oral histories, and non-institutional memory practices challenge and expand the sources of historical geography? How can abolitionist geographies, Black geographies, Indigenous geographies, feminist geographies, and queer geographies reframe our understanding of space, territory, and memory? In what ways do translation, circulation, and appropriation shape the production and contestation of geographical knowledge across different contexts? How can critical re-readings of institutional documents such as maps, surveys, and administrative records open new possibilities for spatial justice and historical reckoning?

We warmly welcome contributions from historical geography, environmental history, archaeology, map and art history, and the broader social sciences, arts and humanities engaged with the past. We are especially committed to creating space for scholars, practitioners, and community researchers working from and with communities whose geographies have been historically marginalised, misrepresented, or erased. The 19th ICHG arrives in South America carrying that commitment as its most fundamental orientation.
